Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday (October 12) said he was ready to contest elections using ballot papers if the Congress governments in Kerala, Karnataka and Telangana resigned, alleging that they too had come to power through ‘vote chori’ under Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Results for the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation (GMC) elections will be declared today, with counting of votes for 40 seats across 11 wards scheduled to begin at 8 am. The contest is primarily between the ruling BJP, the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Polling for the civic body was held on Sunday, October 11. The GMC recorded a tentative voter turnout of 59.25 per cent, while turnout stood at 81.18 per cent in Thara municipality and 56.44 per cent in Okha, the State Election Commission (SEC) said.

The Supreme Court Registry has flagged 14 defects in Rahul Gandhi’s petition, including discrepancies in the names of some respondents and the lack of an explanation for impleading private individuals as respondents. Other defects include the absence of a copy of an earlier judgment, missing vakalatnamas (authorisations for legal representation) from nine petitioners, excluding Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, and a blurred copy of Kharge’s identity document. The Registry has also pointed out a shortfall of Rs 220 in the court fee paid and deficiencies in the printing of documents. Rectifying all these defects on Monday is likely to be difficult.
