Goa govt moves Supreme Court seeking harsher sentence for Tarun Tejpal in 2013 sexual assault case
The Goa government has approached the Supreme Court seeking an enhancement of the sentence awarded to former Tehelka magazine editor Tarun Tejpal in a sexual assault case. The state government has filed a petition before the top court challenging the sentence imposed by the Bombay High Court’s Goa Bench and seeking a higher punishment for Tejpal. This comes days after the Bombay High Court’s Goa Bench subsequently set aside the trial court’s acquittal and convicted Tejpal in the case, awarding him a 10-year prison sentence. Through its petition, the state has urged the Supreme Court to consider increasing the sentence awarded to Tejpal. The matter will now be examined by the top court.

As per a notification issued by the state Home Department, the government has transferred Siwan Superintendent of Police (SP) Pooran Kumar Jha. Notably, Pooran Kumar Jha, under whose command an AK-47 rifle was allegedly used during a student protest in Siwan on July 25, has been placed on the waiting list for a new posting.

The Ahmedabad Cyber Crime Branch has busted a high-profile international cyber fraud network allegedly providing infrastructure and services to cybercriminals based in Pakistan and China. Ahmedabad Police Commissioner Anupam Singh Gehlot said two people have been arrested from West Bengal in connection with the case, while further investigation is underway. The accused have been identified as Imran Ali Piyada and Injamul.
