’21st century belongs to India and ASEAN’: PM Modi declares 2026 as year of maritime cooperation

At the 22nd ASEAN Summit 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a virtual address emphasising the deepening strategic and cultural partnership between India and the ASEAN region. Acknowledging ASEAN as a crucial pillar of India’s “Act East Policy,” Modi highlighted the shared historical ties, values, and trade relations that bind the two regions. He also welcomed Timor-Leste as ASEAN’s newest member and expressed condolences on the passing of Thailand’s Queen Mother. Modi reiterated India’s unwavering support for ASEAN’s centrality in regional and global affairs, noting that together, the two regions represent a quarter of the global population. The Prime Minister underscored the importance of the India-ASEAN Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in maintaining global stability and development, especially during times of uncertainty.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi welcomed the delegation members upon their arrival in Tehran. “The purpose of the visit is to deliver a US message to the Iranian leadership and to plan the next round of negotiations,” Iran’s state-run Press TV reported.
