Bharat Taxi: India’s first co-operative taxi service to challenge Ola and Uber, check details

To challenge the dominance of corporate ride-haling companies like Ola and Uber, the government has joined hands with Sahakar Taxi Cooperative Limited to develop Bharat Taxi – the country’s first fixed national cooperative ride-hailing platform. The cooperative taxi service will be launched in December. Ahead of that, the platform is launching its pilot project in Delhi in November with 650 drivers. It will then expand to other states next month.

Defence ministry approves Rs 79,000 crore procurement to boost Army, Navy and Air Force

The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, has approved major procurement proposals worth around Rs 79,000 crore to strengthen the capabilities of the Indian Armed Forces. The meeting was held at the South Block in New Delhi on Thursday. For the Indian Army, the DAC accorded Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for the procurement of the Nag Missile System (Tracked) Mk-II (NAMIS), Ground Based Mobile ELINT System (GBMES) and High Mobility Vehicles (HMVs) with Material Handling Crane. The NAMIS (Tracked) system will enhance the Army’s ability to destroy enemy combat vehicles, bunkers and other fortified positions. The GBMES will provide continuous electronic intelligence on enemy emitters, while the induction of HMVs will significantly strengthen logistics operations across diverse terrains.

OPINION | Gangs of London streets: Welcome action by police

In a major crackdown against mobile phone snatchers and shoplifters, the London Metropolitan Police arrested 46 people after a two-week-long operation. They were arrested for phone snatching and for buying and smuggling out stolen phones. Nearly 40,000 stolen phones were smuggled out from the United Kingdom to China in the last one year. Nearly 28 properties across London and Hertfordshire were searched during the crackdown against phone snatchers and smugglers. London Mayor Sadiq Khan described this as “the largest operation of its kind in the history of the UK”. He said, “it was humbling to see first-hand how the Met are going after the leaders of international smuggling gangs as well as street robbers and snatchers fuelling this industrial-scale crime.” In my prime time show ‘Aaj Ki Baat’ on India TV last night, we showed videos of phone snatchers and police nabbing the criminals.
