Former England batter Robin Smith, one of the most recognisable figures in the country’s cricketing landscape through the late 1980s and 1990s, has died at the age of 62. His passing in Perth on Tuesday was confirmed by Kevan James, Smith’s former Hampshire colleague, during his programme on BBC Radio Solent, where he works as a sports presenter. James reflected on his former teammate’s career with deep emotion.
A three-day strike by Haryana electricity workers is underway in the state to protest the privatisation of electricity distribution. Polling for 11 seats in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council (MLC), comprising five graduate and six teachers’ constituencies, was held on Friday, with the contest being seen as a prestige battle between the ruling BJP and the Samajwadi Party. As per the official data, the turnout stood at 40.87 per cent till 2 pm. The Bareilly-Moradabad teachers’ constituency recorded the highest turnout at 59.17 per cent, followed by Varanasi at 57.97 per cent.
